Union Cycliste Internationale

Helping the UCI inspire and serve the global cycling community

Working with the UCI as part of a long term digital partnership, we are evolving the UCI’s digital estate in order to better serve the global cycling community and inspire greater mass participation through the catalysts of elite sport and improved accessibility for cycling.

As the worldwide governing body for cycling, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has a focus on developing and promoting cycling as a competitive sport, as a healthy recreational activity and as a means of transport, contributing to the wellbeing of the world’s population and promoting sustainable development.

The first phase of our partnership has focused on the launch of a new uci.org, in order to offer a more consumer-oriented experience, with improved performance standards, an increased level of flexibility for content publishing and a great live event experience.

BETTER CONTENT DISCOVERY

The UCI’s audience is vast and far ranging, from National Federations to commuters, city planners to race officials, and first time cyclists to elite professional riders.

In order to meet the distinct needs of such a varied audience, we identified three key strategies to improve their experience - Intelligent search, restructured IA and navigation, and a flexible content structure.

Search is powered by Algolia, giving an instant and deep dive search experience across the breadth of UCI content and resources, helping users easily find what they’re looking for.

The site’s IA and navigation system was redefined across the site in order to reduce the number of page levels, moving content out of silos and surfacing important and useful information and resources earlier. One key component of this was the introduction of entry point pages tailored to each key audience type e.g. For Federations, containing links to key pages, events, regulations and useful resources.

In addition, the UCI can seamlessly shift from the excitement and buzz of elite level competitive cycling to the institutional and educational needs of a worldwide governing body by utilising the flexible content structure and modular approach to page building defined by the Stadion platform.

CAPTURING THE COMPETITION

The world needs more cyclists, and one of the UCI’s goals is to use elite competitive cycling to showcase the beauty of the sport, in all its many disciplines and guises, to inspire and motivate people to get out on their bikes.

The UCI organises over 70 world class events every year, including the UCI World Cup and World Championship series across thirteen distinct disciplines including Road, Track, Mountain Bike, BMX racing, Cyclo-Cross and e-Cycling.

Now the UCI can create Competition and Race Hubs for each event, giving fans and organisers a central space to engage with live coverage and official race results.

Live commentary, powered by Lively, our intuitive live event tool, creates an exciting and immersive experience for fans with instant news, comments and embeds to maximise their race experience.

We’ve put video deep into the experience (and more to come soon) with live streams coming from YouTube and Red Bull TV, and post-race playlists embeddable directly into the content stream.

And with dedicated spaces for official live timings from the UCI’s partners - Chronorace and Swiss Timings - and official results being published directly into the Race Hubs and calendar, fans and competitors gain instant - and official - insight into each event as it happens.

OFFICIAL EVENTS Calendar

The new site also includes an updated and refined full race calendar across all disciplines, for any UCI sanctioned competitive event in the world.

With an in-built search function and filters across a number of attributes including discipline, category, type and class, the improved UCI event calendar offers an intuitive interface that dives straight into today’s action.

Fans, officials and riders can access race schedules for upcoming and live events and official results from as far back as 1920 up to the present day, acting as the single-point of truth for official and sanctioned race results.
